ZAMREN is a National Research and Education Network (NREN) that began operations in 2012 and has emerged as one of the leading Internet Service Providers and ICT solution providers for Higher Education and Public Research Institutions in Zambia. A National Research and Education Network (NREN) serves as a specialized Internet service provider dedicated to offering Internet and advanced ICT services to the country’s research and educational institutions on a non-profit basis. Bona fide NRENs receive recognition both within their own countries and within the global network of NRENs. This recognition enables them to establish special interconnection agreements with other NRENs around the world, often facilitated through the mediation of Regional Research and Education Networks. Our commitment to equitable access to education and research resources, coupled with our approach to building technical ICT capacity in our member institutions, distinguishes us significantly from other Internet Service Providers. Our growth has been anchored on strong partnerships with local educational and research institutions, access to regional and international research and education networks, and professional expertise in ICT.

NRENs in Europe serve as role models for collaborative networking among universities and research institutions in Africa. Furthermore, most European NRENs, along with some African NRENs such as TENET in South Africa, TERNET in Tanzania, MoaRENet in Mozambique, and RwEdNet in Rwanda, receive substantial funding from their governments.
The primary role of ZAMREN is to provide inter-institutional connectivity as a National Research and Education Network (NREN) and to connect it to the Regional Research and Education Network (RREN) in Eastern, Central, and Southern Africa, the UbuntuNet Alliance, thus extending ZAMREN’s reach to other National Research and Education Networks in Africa and beyond.
ZAMREN is specifically designed for research and educational institutions and it continually strives to pursue and provide services that cannot be commercially offered by ISPs. Research and education networks are becoming an integral part of many countries in Africa all promising to support academics and researchers in an environment increasingly reliant on ICT services and infrastructure. For academics and researchers, this support is paramount as their core activities require access to the analysis of vast amounts of data.
Universities and education systems in general are undergoing significant transformations. Engagement among students and cohorts, design, development, delivery and assessment of programs are all changing largely due to rapid advancements in ICT & the introduction of AI. Through its network and services, ZAMREN will play its role in enabling policymakers, administrators and academics to capitalize on these transformations and foster academic excellence and research.
